Collecting Bookmarks

The number of bookmarks are intrinsically linked the number of books that readers have access to. Bookmarks can be a cheap accessory for the avid reader, or a consuming passion for a collector. The growth in bookmark collecting has not been dynamic, however there is growth and there are a number of clubs in the UK, USA and Australia, to name a few countries. There are also online collector clubs and forums.

Collectors of bookmarks collect the detachable or separate bookmarks that have been produced from the mid 19th century. The early ones being silk or other textiles and in ribbon form, simply copying the previously used attached versions. The first bookmarks were attached to the spine of the book. It is hard to believe the individuals did not use very thin object, likepaper or card as bookmarks prior to the time that historians agree represented the first bookmarks.

When starting any collection it is best to try to understand as early as possible the types of items that are to be collected. Bookmark collecting is no different. There are a number of different themes that could be chosen, like card and paper bookmarks, silk bookmarks, leather bookmarks, bookmarks, advertising particular period, wooden bookmarks and bookmarks the list can go on and on. If unsure, perhaps the best was is to start collecting and discover the types of bookmarks that will ultimately make up most of the collection. When confirmed, the other bookmarks can be sold or traded for the preferred types. Choose also if the collection is to include vintage or antique bookmarks orsimply new contemporary designs.

The bookmarks will almost certainly vintage need to be acquired through searching old garage sales and estate sales. Often they will be inside a book, and the book will need to be purchased. Bookmarks are also on sale through online auction sites and online stores. Make sure in all cases that the seller is reputable and that the product is correctly displayed. Always ask for a photograph if unsure. The proper value of a vintage bookmark is often difficult to determine, as they can be in used condition and they are not normally dated, so do the research to be sure. Join an online collectors forum and ask the questions.

Contemporary bookmarks can be purchased from any number of stores, like supermarkets, bookshops, libraries, second hand storesand online. Some online sites even provide designs that can be printed on a standard home printer for free.

Any collection needs to be cataloged and stored securely. Think about these parts early in the collecting process.

Collecting bookmarks can be a first hobby for a teenager or a relatively cheap hobby for anyone. Above all have fun when collecting!
